What gives with Passover? Is it significant?
Please allow me to begin answering this
question by sharing with you that when we, as believers in Jesus, gather in
church to worship, when we assemble at Bible studies and dig into God’s word,
when we spend time with God during “quiet times,” when we share Jesus with
those who don’t yet know Him, we are doing so because of Passover! The body of Christ is in existence today
because of Passover. The Apostle Paul,
inspired by the Holy Spirit, wrote in I Cor. 5:7, …Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us. What am I saying? Passover, the first feast that God gave to
the children of Israel, focuses on redemption through the shed blood of the
Passover Lamb. And, that Passover Lamb is
Jesus! Passover is the foundation of our
faith. Passover points to the death of
Jesus. Jesus was crucified on Passover.
And, God instructed the children of Israel to observe Passover… So this day shall be to you a memorial; and you shall keep it as a feast to the Lord throughout your generations. You shall keep it as a feast by an everlasting ordinance. “OK,” you might be thinking… “God gave this feast of Passover to the children of Israel. It’s ‘Old Testament.’”
Firstly, the Bible is one narrative. The New Covenant is the fulfillment of the Hebrew Scriptures. Jesus fulfilled the law. Jesus celebrated Passover as a Jewish man. Secondly, at His last Passover Seder with His disciples, Jesus, lifting the cup of redemption at the Seder, proclaimed, this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
Thirdly, do you know that the Jewish people were not solely delivered from Egypt at the first Passover? Ex. 12:38 tells us that a mixed multitude went up with them also. Egypt was a conquering country. Egypt conquered other lands and took captives as slaves. This mixed multitude was most likely comprised of Gentiles captured from many nations. Thought provoking, wouldn’t you say?
Fourthly, are you looking forward to Jesus’ physical Second Coming? We, as Gentile believers in Jesus will reside in the Millennial Kingdom along with the OT saints and with the Tribulation saints. Ezekiel 45:21 tells us that during the Millennium, in the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, you shall observe the Passover, a feast of seven days; unleavened bread shall be eaten. We will celebrate Passover during the Millennial Kingdom!
What a graphic picture is revealed to us through the narrative of the first Passover in Exodus 12: the deliverance of both Jews and Gentiles through the blood of the Passover lamb! God’s heart for the world is revealed in Passover. God’s directive to the Jewish people to keep Passover as a memorial forever demonstrates the ongoing telling of His story of redemption. Currently, God is using the Church as His tool of redemption – to tell the story. The Church is to proclaim salvation to the world – the message of redemption through the blood of the perfect Passover Lamb, Jesus.
Passover is indeed significant. Passover is significant enough to be celebrated each year during Jesus’ 1,000 year reign in the Millennial Kingdom.
